Jo leaned over the steep rocky side, terrified she’d been wrong. That Petrus’s body wouldn’t be able to withstand the impact. That a stray branch from the dense treeline at the bottom would impale him and the fire wouldn’t work.

She watched until his body disappeared into the dense growth.

“Petrus?” Her voice was tentative. Quiet. She tried again, loud enough to carry across the distance. “Petrus!”

Fear pierced her at the silence. What should she do? If she didn’t run now, she might not have another chance. But what if he were hurt?

Adam and Christopher are hurt!

Ignoring the sickness in her gut, she turned and fled back to the cabin. Her hands shook as she tried the handle on the truck, relief filling her when it opened. Searching the inside for keys produced nothing, however, and she raced into the cabin, opening every drawer, turning over every last place she could think they might be hidden. Nothing.

Plunging her hands into her hair, she turned wildly in the room, trying to think. Where would he have put them? Did he keep them in his pocket?

She ran back outside and climbed into the driver’s seat. Adam or Christopher might know how to hot-wire a car. Staring under the steering, she waited for one of their memories to help her out. Nothing.

Frustration poured from her throat, and she glanced back at the road. Petrus was probably fine. Probably fine and probably on his way back. She needed to get out of there.

Scrambling back out, she slammed the door and ran toward the woods. She’d have liked to just follow the dirt road, but that would be the most obvious place for her to go. And above all, she couldn’t let herself get caught again before she’d managed to make contact.

Images of Petrus lying broken and suffering flooded her mind, and she pushed them away furiously as she raced through the forest. If there was a road, there must be other homes somewhere out here. Or something out here.

The thick undergrowth scratched at her legs as she raced through the trees, trying to wind through in a way that could get her down the mountains. The view from the trail had only revealed wooded hills and valleys, so she headed the opposite way, hoping to find signs of human life.

An hour or so later, her hope was floundering. And she was thirsty.

“Okay,” she whispered. “This is a real forest. There should be water somewhere. Plants need water.”

Her steps had slowed, and she trudged along a bit more wearily now. Petrus’s fire had made her body perfect, so she was in excellent shape, but she’d run at the maximum speed she was capable of on the terrain long enough to tire her out.

When the sound of of trickling water drifted to her ears at last, relief washed over her and she picked up her pace once again, flying through the trees to burst out onto a gorgeous treelined brook with large moss covered stones and sparkling water
